Alexandr Bychovsky

Alexandr Bychovsky (1888-1979) was one of that group of talented Jewish artists who with the establishment of the Communist system were freed from the previous antisemitism of Czarist regimes. The same Communist system, however, later forced these artists into obscurity and in many cases deep poverty. Bychovsky was born in Gomel, Byelorussia, attended the Odessa Art School from 1913-1915 and studied at Marc Chagall's art institute in Vitebsk during 1919. From 1919-1921 he headed the Art Studio of Gomel, and then moved to Moscow in 1922 where he died in 1979. In 1943 he became the stage artist for the Dramatic Theater, Sverdlovsk, Siberia. He was a painter, sculptor, and graphic artist as well as a stage designer.
