Arthur Szyk

Arthur Szyk (1894–1951) was born in Lodz, Poland. After fighting in the Russian Army during World War I, and after the war in the Polish Army against the Russians, he moved in 1921 to Paris to continue his art education. With the German Invasion of Poland he immigrated to the United States in 1940. His reputation as an artist relies primarily on his book illustrations and his World War II political caricatures of the Axis leaders. He was a meticulous draftsman who wielded a rich pallette of colors to produce an immediately identifiable style. More information about Szyk is available at this website.

 Szyk Hagggadah

Arthur Szyk illustrated and Cecil Roth edited an outstanding 20th C. Haggadah first published in London (1940), printed on vellum and limited to 250 copies. Szyk based his forms on traditional European Haggadot, but also used his distinctive visual language to comment on pre-holocaust Europe. Many of the images from this text found their way into other publications. For example, the illustration of the “Four Sons” shown here is quoted in other Haggadot.

This is a 1962 facsimile edition printed in Israel. The photo-offset images, reproduced from the original, and the text are printed on double pages colored to resemble vellum. The boards are covered with a deep blue velvet fabric and are gold imprinted with a stylized cup front and back, and with decorative elements and “Arthur Szyk” and “The Hagaddah” in both Hebrew and English on the spine. The book is boxed in a clam shell which is lined inside with the same blue velvet and has cloth and leather boards with gold imprint on the front cover and spine. The Haggadah is in excellent condition except for a small mark on the lower front edge and minor rubbing marks on the corners, front and back, of the cover. The case is structurally intact but shows some of the rubbing that would occur on use.
