Milton Glaser

Milton Glaser (b. 1929) is the foremost American graphic designer of the past half century. Though his best known work is the iconic I (heart) New York slogan, he has had a prolific and multifaceted career. A fuller account of his life is found in Wikipedia and there is a DVD available, entitled Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight, in which he discusses his work.

Glaser Poster - Saratoga Winter Festival

This is a particularly attractive Milton Glaser poster designed to advertise the 1983-84 Winter Festival held in Saratoga Springs, New York. The image resembles a Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print, although the figure of the woman suggests Dutch-in-America. As is his norm, the artist has included a 'signature' - in this case easily overlooked in the lower right corner. The poster, printed on heavy paper, was published by the New York State Department of Commerce. The poster is in excellent condition and will be shipped rolled and in a tube.

 Glaser Poster - Summer Festival

"Summer Festival 1982 - A good old summertime in the central leatherstocking region July 2-September 6", is the message of this poster designed by Milton Glaser. Under a portrait of Sa Ga Yeath Pieth Tow, a Brant Mohawk chief/1710 is a pleasant landscape of hills, lakes and forests with a 'colonial' cloth pattern border. At the top center is Glaser's iconic I 'Love' New York; and his name appears at the lower border of the landscape.

 Glaser Poster - Winter Festival

Old Man Winter becomes a mountain atop which balances a skier ready to take the plunge. This whimsical design by Milton Glaser is for a poster advertising the 1982-83 New York Winter Festival held in the northwestern part of the state. The famous I 'love' New York logo designed by Glaser appears in pride of place at center top. The poster, printed on heavy paper, was published by the New York State Department of Commerce. The poster is in excellent condition and will be shipped rolled and in a tube.

 Milton Glaser Poster

This poster advertising the Fall Festival of the Finger Lakes in New York was designed by Milton Glaser. Mark Twain is comfortably seated, perhaps prepared to begin a reading from the book held on his lap. The background, which mirrors the oriental rug below Twain's feet, illustrates the Finger Lakes and the water sports associated with the region. Prominent in the foreground are the grapes from which wine is made in that region. While the image is complex, the full length figure of Twain immediately draws the eye, a requirement in good poster design. We are uncertain as to the connection of Twain with the Finger Lakes, though he and his family did live nearby in Elmira, New York for some time. The poster is in very good condition and is backed onto an acid-free linen.

 Milton Glaser Poster - Sony

Milton Glaser’s images are always witty and striking. In this ad for Sony a “Magritte” figure must be listening to music using his shell-like ear. Or perhaps he is hearing the roar of the sea, or maybe nothing at all based on the empty music sheet behind him. This 1960 poster is in excellent condition.

 Vespa

Milton Glaser designed this poster to advertise the 50th year (1996) of Vespa scooter production. The scooter's front wheel while reminding us of the entire vehicle also becomes the last letter of the Vespa name and part of the number 50. The poster, in excellent condition, is mounted on acid-free linen.
