Yair Stern

Yaïr Stern was born in Haifa. While studying mathematics at The Technion, the preeminent science university in Israel, he supported himself by making and selling silver jewelry, “between one Q.E.D. and another.” Making jewelry by hand appears to be part of young Israelis’ psyches; which may explain how jewelry conquered math and why he turned to design as a fulltime profession. He is now settled in North York, Toronto, Canada where he formulates both jewelry and beautifully crafted items of Judaica. The clean designs of his Judaica and his refashioning of age old forms may reflect his penchant for mathematics. But they also reflect modern Israel’s reformulation of religious and cultural traditions.

This seder plate is fashioned from 2 rounds of aluminum, the lower anodized a deep blue. Cut from the top plate are 6 circles, into which fit slightly tapered glass cups, and a design of three pomegranates crowning the Hebrew Pesach. A stunningly simple design from the studio of Yair Stern.

 Mezuzah Case

Yair Stern has designed an attractive and practical aluminum and glass mezuzah case. The front panal, with a cut out pomegranate motif, snaps open to reveal a glass tube into which the klaf goes. A cover on the tube keeps out the elements, so that the case can be placed outdoors.

height - 4 1/4"; width and depth - 5/8"

To obtain a kosher parchment

Price: $41.00

 Traveling Chanukah Menorah

While we have come across many traveling Chanukiot, Ido Drukker's is the first we have seen that comes in a CD jewel case. The individual cut out aluminum pieces fit easily together to form a menorah that is 6 3/4" wide and 5" tall at the shamash. Going on a ski trip, celebrating Chanukah at college - what could be classier? And it accepts the normal chanukah candles.

Price: $73.00
