 Wood Inlay Mezuzah Case
Lorelei and Alex Gruss are justifiably well known for their wood and semiprecious inlay Judaica designs. This large (approx. 7 5/8 x 2 1/8 in.) mezuzah case, one of a series of twelve named after the 12 tribes, is based on the text of Numbers VII, 66-67 in the Torah section describing the gifts for the new sanctuary. The leader of the Sons of Dan, Ahi'ezer son of Ammishaddai offers, one dish of silver, thirty and a hundred its shekel-weight, one bowl of silver, seventy shekels according to the Holy Shrine shekel, both of them filled with flour mixed with oil for a grain-gift....with additional gifts to follow. The inlaid image of this case refers to the tribe of Dan by depicting a silver balance presumably useful for determining the shekel weight of the donated silver. The Grusses made the case from ebony, yellow ossage, silver, antique ivory, purple heart and a blue dyed wood and signed it on the reverse, Gruss 1966.
