  Israeli Cultural Objects

Israel today is remarkably different than Israel of the early 50's and 60's. And after a span of 50+ years, we look back remembering with nostalgia (whether we were or were not aound at the time) what was good; and play down, or perhaps reinterpret, what was not so good. As a result, the many cultural artifacts of that period attract our interest. So, we feature here some of the objects that were created early in the history of the Jewish state with the hope that they may resonate with our remembrances.

 Israeli Silver Pin

This charming silver pin is decorated with Eilat stone, garnets and river pearls. There are no markings on the back so we can only guess at its age. The style, however, resembles that of early Israeli jewelry, so we have tentatively given it an age of 50 or more years.

height 1 1/2"; width 2 1/4"

Price: $200.00

 Israeli Silver Pin/Pendant

This old Israeli pin/pendant has an Eilat stone set into silver. Stamped on the back is YERUSHALYIM in Hebrew. The marking and style suggest the pendant was crafted around the time of the establishment of the State of Israel.

height - 1 3/8"; width - 1 1/8"

Price: $150.00

 Silver Pin - Yemenite

A large ornate handmade silver pin. Although not marked, we have had this pin in our possession for more than 40 years, placing its fabrication in the early years of the State of Israel. The pin has a very characteristic Yemenite design - lacy curves and tight spirals to form an almost woven complex design.

width 2 3/4"

Price: $200.00

 Silver Pin

Based on the gorgeous workmanship of this silver Yemenite brooch, we believe that it is approximately 50 years old. Handmade with 3 stages, it is decorated by small rosettes. Israelis do not make jewelry with equal workmanship anymore.

diameter - 1 1/2"; body height - 1/2"

Price: $200.00

 Tu B'shvat - JNF Poster

Beneath a large fruit tree with birds singing among its branches, children and young adults are planting and watering the next generation of trees. Amongst the flowers strewn about the background of this charming poster are hidden the words Tu B'shvat. The artist's name appears in the plate at the lower right, and on the lower border the English, French, Spanish and Hebrew text indicates that the poster was published by the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet L'Yisrael).

This lithographic poster (approx 18 1/2" x 13 1/4") appears to date from the 1960's. It is in excellent condition; we will ship it flat in an acid-free mat.

Price: $80.00

 Vintage Israeli Brass Candy Dish

Pal-Bell covered candy dish (catalogue no #318 - "Ruth"): this hand-finished cast brass candy bowl with hinged cover and dark green patina (The image suggests a blacker hue than the actual color.) exemplifies the attractive metal pieces produced by the Israeli company Pal-Bell during the 50's. The cover is embossed with an image of Ruth harvesting wheat and around the lid is a decoration of grape laden vines. Some of the underlying brass was allowed to peek through the patina forming highlights in the image. The bowl is in good condition with a few minor dents, scratches and patina loss. Stamped on the bottom surface are the company logo, "made in Israel" in both Hebrew and English, and the number 220.

diameter - 5 3/8"; height - 2 1/8"

Price: $380.00
