7 Poets – a Logan Elm Press publication – is a limited edition portfolio of portraits by Sid Chafetz with text by James Battersby. Sid Chafetz, inspired by Samuel Johnson’s “Lives of the Poets” produced seven portraits* after the examination of “several engravings before choosing a representative image…interpretations of interpretations… (Battersby’s introduction for the publication.) Each portrait and its accompanying historic text are printed on a single large sheet folded in half, book-style. The individual folded sheets are stored in a heavy paper portfolio with paper title pasted onto the cover. Chafetz produced the portraits with the technique of multi-color (4 or 5) reduction woodcutting. Each print is made by initially cutting away part of the wood surface, printing that layer, and then cutting and printing again serially for each individual color. There are 75 copies in the edition; this particular copy is numbered 15 and signed by Sid Chafetz, James L. Battersly and Bob Tauber (the Logan Elm Press printer) in pencil on the colophon. (books)
