In 1980 The Public Broadcasting System began airing “Mystery Theater” weekly on Thursday nights. The host for one year was Gene Shalit, the well known, mustachioed movie critic. That year 4 episodes of Rumpole of the Bailey starring Leo McKern were broadcast. From 1980 through 1985, Rumpole appeared in a total of 41 episodes. This large magnificent poster, a 1980 promotion piece, was designed by Seymour Chwast (b. 1931), an acclaimed commercial artist. The image of Leo McKern in Rumpole’s court attire is the major graphic element, but Chwast has included a total of 4 arms – one additional arm to hold the hero’s glasses and another for an item of evidence. The poster is signed Chwast in the lower right corner of the plate. Mobil, the sponsor of the series, is printed in the lower left corner. We are expecially attracted to this poster because we fondly remember watching Leo McKern during those 5 seasons and the image evokes an immediate smile. The poster is in excellent condition with only minor handling creases.
