This is a 1978 YIVO reproduction of a 1920s poster for the classic Yiddish musical The Two Kuni Lemls by Abraham Goldfaden (1840-1908). Born in Russia Goldfaden, the acknowledged father of Yiddish Theater, wrote 400 plays during his career. He began performing his first in Romania in 1876. When Russian authorities prohibited Yiddish theater in 1883, Goldfaden moved west and settled ultimately (1903) in New York City. The design of this poster by Joseph Cutler is unusual in comparison to the normal Yiddish Theater format – pictures and names of the actors. But this was not a usual performance, for Cutler was a puppeteer and the stars of this Kuni Leml production were his puppets. This copy is a lithographic print on heavy paper. It is in excellent condition having only minor creases.
